Past Activities

Here is a small version of the activities our club did in the 2005-2006 school year

  •  Performed eye screenings at the Brown County Red Cross Health Fair, held on NSU’s campus on April 23;
  • Hosted a half-day Leadership Training session for Lions District 5-SE on April 30;
  • Served free lemonade to NSU students during finals week in May;
  • Participated in the Dash for Diabetes event during summer break (May 21), with the proceeds going to Camp Gilbert, a camp for diabetic children;
  • Co-presented, with their advisor, a session titled “Starting a Campus Lions Club” at two different times during the Lions MD-5 Convention in Spearfish in June;
  • Participated in the “Pig Out” pizza sales event, also during summer break, with the proceeds going to Camp Gilbert;
  • Helped the Aberdeen Lions with their Football Booklet fundraiser the first week of September;
  • Participated in the SD School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SDSBVI) back-to-school picnic on September 8;
  • Participated in the NSU Activities Fair, by “manning” the booth and promoting Lionism on campus, on September 8;
  • Participated in the Split-Pot fundraiser at the Brown County Speedway car races on September 16;
  • Helped with the Mobile Screening Unit (which provides screenings for vision, glaucoma, hearing, diabetes, and blood pressure, free of charge, to people in the community) by performing free “vision screenings” at the Lakewood Mall Community Fair on September 17;
  • Helped with highway ditch cleanup on September 20, followed by a pizza party for all participants;
  • Helped with the SDSBVI track meets on September 23, 24, 30;
  • Helped with the NSU Gypsy Day parade lineup on October 1;
  • Helped with Special Olympics events in the fall, 2005;
  • Distributed 500 Scouting for Food and Eyeglasses “reminder” door hangers throughout the Aberdeen community on October 26;
  • Helped with the Celebrity Pheasant Hunt “Williams & Ree” concert on October 28, with Camp Gilbert the recipient of all proceeds (members served as ticket-takers, ushers, cleanup crew, etc.);
  • Sold “Community Day” coupons as a club fundraiser; helped Herberger’s with Community Day event by assisting customers, bagging purchases, etc.
  • Currently selling mints on campus as a club fundraiser with all proceeds going back to the public for philanthropic purposes;
  • Participated in the SDSBVI Halloween Costume Party/Dance on Thursday, October 27;
  • Participated in the Aberdeen Lions Governors Night event on November 1;
  • Hosted the Governor’s Night visit for District Governor Delmer Hofer and his wife, Lion Shirley, on Northern’s campus November 1;
  • Installed nine new members during the DG visit;
  • Attended several Lions zone meetings throughout the past year;
  • Wrapped Christmas gifts on NSU’s campus, as a fundraiser, on December 1 and again on December 13;
  • Rang bells for the Salvation Army on December 10;
  • Participating in the SDSBVI Christmas Party on December 13;
  • Sponsored two SDSBVI students and one Angel Tree recipient during Christmas season;
  • Set up an information booth on “Campus Lions Clubs” at the Lions State Convention in Watertown in January;
  • Have been working with folks from the Brookings Lions Club to help them get a Campus Lions Club up and running at SDSU;
  • Helped with opening ceremonies during the Lions State Convention in January by carrying the flag during the introductory session;
  • Helped with the Lions necrology services in January, designed to recognize all Lions from South Dakota who have died in the past year, by taking a very active part in the services and by individually placing a flower in a vase for each deceased member as their name was called;
  • Helped with the Aberdeen Lions Pancake Breakfast on February 5, with senior citizens eating free and all proceeds from the event going to vision-related services provided by the Lions;
  • Continue to be active participants in the “Eyeglass Recycling” program on NSU’s campus;
  • Helped with the “spreadsheet” portion of the NSU Science Fair on March 30;
  • Participated in Special Olympics activities on April 6;
  • Delivered gift baskets to nursing homes on April 11;
  • Scheduled to perform eye screenings at the Brown County Health Fair on April 22;
  • Scheduled to participate in Barrier Awareness Day at the SDSBVI on April 28;
  • Scheduled to participate in District-sponsored Lions Leadership training on April 29;
  • Scheduled to participate in highway cleanup activities on May 2;
  • Will be again hosting a free lemonade stand for NSU students during finals week (May 8-9);
  • Will be helping set up for the Dash for Diabetes event on May 19;
  • Will be helping with the Dash for Diabetes event on May 20;
  • Lions Multiple-District 5 (SD, ND, and Saskatchewan) leaders have visited with the club’s faculty advisor about the possibility of having the students present at this year’s MD5 Conference, scheduled for June 8-10 in Fargo, ND.
